Nevermore’s Believe In Nothing from their 2000 release Dead Heart In A Dead World has been covered by two different bands in the past few months. The first band to cover it (Or first to be released) was All That Remains on their latest release, Overcome. The second band was Firewind on the Century Media: Covering 20 Years Of Extremes compilation.

While most people say that nothing holds true to the original, I have listened to all three and I must say that both All That Remains and Firewind did a great job covering this song. When I first heard that Firewind was covering it I thought that it would actually be a lot better than ATR’s version. Apollo has an amazing power metal voice and Gus G. and the rest of the band are amazing musicians as well. I’m not taking anything away from All That Remains because Phil is a good singer and Oli Herbert is a great guitar player.

I loved ATR’s version but when I first heard the Firewind cover I was not as impressed…until I listened to it a couple more times. Firewind stick more closely to the original, even with guitar effects. I think both are good solid covers in their own right.

When it comes to something like this it all comes down to personal opinion. Like I said, most will say that nothing can hold true to the original. Some bands either try to out-do the original while others just add their own sound or attributes to a cover song. In this case I don’t think it is either. I think both bands respect the original song and band and these covers are more of a tribute to Nevermore. I couldn’t find a streaming version of Firewind’s cover of Believe In Nothing (it used to be available to stream at Century Media Europe Myspace), but I did find one of the original and All That Remains version. Give them both a listen and tell me which one you like…that is if you can decide. (You can even download Nevermore original here).
