Sodom

When I was younger I used to pride myself on being a fan of thrash metal. The problem was that I really didn’t know that many thrash metal bands and being from a small town, it wasn’t easy to discover new and/or old thrash bands. Also the thrash era had kind of quieted down by that time and glam and grunge were pretty much the main bullshit in metal magazines. After that I started to get more into death metal. A few years later I turned to NY Hardcore bands and a few nu-metal bands that I thought were wroth a listen. It wasn’t until the last few years that I’ve started to move backwards. I’ve started liking death metal a lot more, even the incomprehensible vocal type of “Brutal” death metal. Along with my renewed faith and focus on death metal has come my diggin’ for thrash bands that I missed over the years. Kreator and Testament are two bands that I really love these days. Lately my new thrash metal love is the sound of German thrash metal vets Sodom.

If you are in to thrash and have never checked out Sodom then you are doing yourself a huge injustice. Back in the day the US had the big 4 being Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Somehow Overkill and Exodus got left out of the loop but still made huge waves. During that time German thrashers were saying “We can do that shit to”! Germany had the big 3, consisting of the previously mentioned Kreator, Destruction and of course Sodom. All three of these bands sounded slightly in the technique, vocals and overall vicious fury. The big 4 of the United States have all evolved in their sound to an either less technical, stale or softer state, whereas the big three of Germany have evolved into something even more intense than they were 20 plus years ago and are still going strong.

So, back to Sodom. See what albums of Sodom’s you can dig up, maybe even some vinyl if you can find it. I love the older, production-lacking records, but the newer albums like Code Red, Sodom, M-16 and ‘Til Death Do Us Unite (which has a kind of thrash/punk crossover sound to it.). I would even suggest their newest release The Final Signs Of Evil, but I have been building my collection and haven’t got to that one yet. These albums may be easier to find, depending where you look.

Sodom is one of those bands that somehow gets overlooked in the mainstream. I overlooked them. I heard the name amny times and you can only see and hear a name so many times before you have to find out what the big deal is. If you dig thrash metal of new and old then discover Sodom and you will not be disappointed.
