Gwar Lust In Space: Perhaps The Best Gwar I've Heard In A Long Time

Gwar: Lust In Space

Gwar: Lust In Space

Last week a new sampler of the new Gwar album Lust In Space was made available to people such as myself. Today was the first time I have had a chance to actually sample the sampler, which consists of four tracks off of the August 18th release. One of the songs, Let Us Slay is available for streaming at Gwar’s Myspace. Here is part of the announcement from their Myspace blog:

Sez Oderus, GWAR’s warty lead singer and convicted whale-molester, “This song deals with the human race’s lust for blood, all the while maintaining the lie of ‘Thou shalt not kill’…It calls upon the humans to embrace their love of death (and therefore GWAR), shed their hypocritical trappings, and proceed with the apocalypse. It’s going to happen anyway, so they might as well enjoy it!”

As far as the track and the other three from the sampler go, it sounds really good. It’s probably the best Gwar I have heard in a long time. Gwar isn’t something for everyone. You have to have a certain taste for them and their music to really enjoy it for what it is. Gwar. Musically the songs are more melodic and more of a serious metal nature than I think they have really put forth in some time. Damnation Under God has a thrashy, modern metal feel to it and is far from their punkish/metal sound that they began with so long ago. Metal-Metal Land is just an awesome and funny song that must be heard to truly appreciate. Imagine a land where everything is metal! Now the last song on the sampler is a bit different. Okay, it’s way different because it almost doesn’t even sound like Gwar. The Price Of Peace I’m almost 110% sure is not sung by Oderus. The thrashy bit features whomever normally does the backing vocals and it sounds really good. I think I can hear Oderus doing a bit of backing vocals, but that’s about it for him. Perhaps the most serious metal song of the bunch, I really dig it. When I say “most serious” I mean that there doesn’t seem to be much, if any of the novelty that Gwar usually brings.

For a change I’m actually looking forward to a new Gwar album. Below is the track list. Look for Lust In Space on Metal Blade records on August 18th (2009).

  • I enjoyed the last GWAR release alot more then their past ones – most notably the Alice Cooper cover (“School’s Out”). I’ll have to check this one out.
I do like the more groome-oriented mindset they have been in of late, less of just balls-to-the-wall speed and shouting

  • Dave Long:

Very Cool, But, To bad GWAR had to rip The Mantors “Lust Muscle” Record Cover.

  • bastard:

Dave Long, youre an idiot. It’s a KISS reference. I don’t even like KISS and I know this. Jesus Christ.

  • joe derus:

Think yer both wrong, but Dave long is probably closer, being that Gwar and the mentors have been long time friends. GWAR would never reference kiss, except to kill them!! It has to do with the fact that ever since Gwar crashed on this horrid planet, theyve been trying to leave. So in this album, they might finally do so, hence lust in space. Only to find everywhere else sux just as bad. And we have CRACK!!

  • Gwar and Mentors were friends for sure, and Both bands did copy those Album covers from Kiss:Love Gun.
Both bands were also influenced by Kiss and Alice Cooper.

Lust in Space is an Amazing CD.

  • Big Hoss:

I LOVE the new GWAR CD. But, I got the the Mentors/Mantors cd a year before and it was called “LUST MUSCLE” Gwar has Coverd Mentors Songs before. If you think thay didn’t know about it “Bastard” Your the Idiot! GWAR Rocks but, The MENTORS ARE LEGENDARY!
