Lars Almost Fired From Metallica Back In '86
The newest drama in the world of metal is that Dave Mustaine claims that James, Kirk and Cliff had plans to fire Lars Ulrich after the Master of Puppets tour. In an interview with Classic Rock magazine, he claims that this was told to him by Anthrax’s Scott Ian.

[From Blabbermouth] In a recent interview with RollingStone.com, reporter Greg Prato asked, “As far as you know, is it true that on the last METALLICA tour Cliff Burton was on before he died, the band was planning on firing Lars Ulrich at the tour’s end?” Mustaine replied, “That’s what Scott (Ian, ANTHRAX guitarist) told me. He said that when METALLICA got home, that James (Hetfield, frontman), Cliff and Kirk (Hammett, guitarist) were going to fire Lars.”
In the same story there was something that said that Scott Ian denied telling Mustaine anything of the sort, but since then Ian has denied the denial that was posted on the Anthrax official Twitter that is run by Brent Thompson.
The story goes on to say that the unfortunate death of Cliff Burton put a stop to their plans to fire Ulrich. Interesting story it is, but this far down the line does anyone give a shit? It’s too late now to worry about things like this. Of course James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett will probably deny having any knowledge of this, even if confronted by Lars. Maybe this was what we saw in that horrid film, Some Kind Of Monster. Maybe the fact is that James wanted to oust Lars a long time ago and put up with his crap out of pitty.
Is this something that Mustaine wanted to bring light to just to stir things up in the Metallica camp? Maybe, but why would he, seeing that the feud between himself and Ulrich is pretty much dust in the wind? Maybe he said it to get under James’ skin, I don’t know. Dave says that he made the statement to help sell Scott Ian’s biography or some shit like that, but Ian says that there is no book. I honestly don;t know what the hell is going on.
All I know is that Metallica without Lars and/or James would not be Metallica, no matter how much you may love or hate them. It’s sort of like Metallica without Cliff Burton. It’s just not the same and it never will be.

We, 3 generations before us and 3 generation after us may remember Metallica’s members.
But then, Metallica will not be related to members, instead it will be remembered as a legend with one name only and one great legacy, and I think that is a respectful tribute to them.
True, true.
