Review: Gwar – Lust In Space

Gwar: Lust In Space

Gwar: Lust In Space

25 years come and gone since the thawing [in Antarctica] of the intergalactic abominations known simply as Gwar. The Scumdogs are fed up with being stuck on this shit-hole planet and want off of this rock. Lust In Space, the title track of the album says it all. “Again, what grim vision this…blood-stained tombs, beer cans and piss. This is no life for a god!”.

You’ve probably heard the first single from Lust In Space called Let us Slay. If you haven’t you can listen to the the single in the widget at the bottom. Not my favorite song off of the album, but it shows your typical Gwar sound plus a lot of melody and ass kickery.

Metal Metal Land is a place I want to go. Everything is loud and everything is metal! perhaps the most fun song of the bunch, Metal Metal Land makes you say “Fuck yeah! That’s where I want to be!”. When you hear it you will understand. Hopefully they will stream this song on Myspace soon.

My favorite song on the album has got to be The Price of Peace. The Entire song is sung by one of the backing vocal members, whether it’s Balsac or Beefcake, I’m not sure. All I know is that it’s an awesome song that basically says in order to have peace, everything must die. Ultimately, that is true.

The solos, rhythm and everything around it on this album is tight as can possibly be. Gwar are sometimes not taken seriously as musicians because of their image or gimmick, which-ever way you want to put it. The truth is that there is an overload of talent in this band and even without the gimmick, Gwar would slay like no other.

(On a more serious review perspective) Over the years Gwar‘s sound has evolved, progressed and has been pushed for perfection. In the early days there was a lot of punk riffed based songs. However, over the years the sound has morphed into a more solid metal sound and changed with the times while still staying relevant and interesting without sacrificing the bands integrity and signature sound.

Line-ups have changed over the years and the band has become a group of tighter musicians [without discrediting past members] and performers. Just when you think Gwar is no more, they come back with a new album and the spectacle of their show. If you’ve never been to a Gwar show then you are missing out on one hell of an experience and a shit-load of fun.

Lust In Space is catastrophic masterpiece of menacing musical brilliance and comical genius that can only be achieved by Gwar. Will they ever leave the planet, or will they be here and perhaps be the cause of the bitter end. Lust In Space is by far my favorite Gwar album since Scumdogs Of The Universe.  A lot of up and coming bands could learn a lot from Gwar, if not just perseverance and showmanship. It’s good to see them back on Metal Blade again. Look for Lust In Space on August 18th.
