The Burning Question: Marty Friedman Vs. Chris Broderick

Marty Friedman was always my favorite Megadeth guitarist. He’s simply amazing and I love his solo work too. When word got out that Chris Broderick was part of the newest version of the Megadeth line up, shortly after Glen Drover left, I was excited. Glen Drover was (and still is) a great guitar player, but I thought if there was anyone that could help bring the classic Megadeth sound back to the band, it was Chris.

To me, Chris not only brings the shredding speed back in to the mix, but a lot of the ultra melodic solos that seemed to be absent after Marty left. Not only that, but he plays them with more accuracy than ANY post-Friemand Megadeth guitarist. It’s kind of toss up for me. On one hand I still love Marty Frieman’s work, but I’m more enthusiastic about what Chris Broderick is bringing to the Megadeth table these days. With that said, check out this video where Marty and Chris play the solo from Tornado Of Souls, and compare. Friemand…or Broderick?

  • Fascinating video. I’ve been a fan of Chris Broderick ever since I saw him play with Jag Panzer, opening for Iced Earth in 1998. The dude is insane. I’d rather have Broderick in the band right now. But having said that, nothing beats Marty Friedman doing the original solo.
So I vote Broderick for Megadeth, Friedman in this video.

  • In my humble opinion, I feel Broderick’s playing in this particular video was definitly superior. I don’t know what it was or how he did it…somehow he was more expressive and well paced than Friedman himself, comparing the two now it seems like Friedman just rushed right through it, while Broderick’s playthrough just seemed to “flow” better again IMO.
    Damn that guy is good.

  • HS:

I recently saw an entire set of Chris Broderick playing a lot of Marty’s tunes and in some of the hardest solos he misses notes and his phrasing is different. Plus the fact that marty wrote the solos.

Chris Broderick has yet to write any songs or solos that come even close to what Marty wrote when he was in Megadeth.
Guitar playing is a lot more about feeling thant just technical chops.
