Best Of 2009 List Consistencies
I have not come across a “Best Of 2009″ list yet that Mastodon are not the number 1 pick or at least top three. It seems that Crack The Skye is an all around favorite of most bloggers and magazines. Compared to 2008, I think the magazines have finally got it right this year instead of putting a veteran band like Megadeth as number 1. While I love Endgame, I don’t think it is by any means better than Crack The Skye. Engame has been showing up in quite a few top 5’s though, including my own.
Another band that I am seeing quite a bit of on these best of lists is Anaal Nathrakh’s In The Constellation Of The Black Widow, which has me extremely curious now. Also Goatwhore’s Carving Out The Eyes Of God has made the cut on quite a few lists as well.
One album that is getting a lot of praise that I’m not really feeling is Revocation’s Existence Is Futile. Perhaps I just haven’t heard enough, but the little bit that I have heard just hasn’t won me over. I’ll give it time and try again.
Slayer’s World Painted Blood has popped up on a few and while I’m still a big Slayer fan, I just don;t feel that they have written an album worth any list in quite some time. World Painted Blood is better than most albums they have done in awhile but just not to my taste for a list. It’s just a matter of personal opinion I suppose.
All in all, it’s tough to make a list of top albums of 2009 because there were just so many great releases this year. That’s why I limited my own lists to 6 while pitting them in specific sub-genres. It was just much easier that way than arguing with myself if I made a top 20.
I do see a great inconsistency though, and that is that Skeletonwhich are being very under-rated with Breathing The Fire. Amazing album that should be getting a lot more attention and praise, but again, it’s all about personal preference. I look forward to see what 2010 will bring us and I look forward even more to some more great shows to attend in the next year.
Krisiun Performing In Raleigh, NC on October 2nd
Friday night’s show was great. it was a much better turn-out than I expected; of course the classic bands always seem to draw a bigger crowd in this area. Warbringer opened the show with ferocity as usual and had the energy to get the crowd ready for the bands to come. The Berzerker, a band I had only heard of, made quite the impact with the death metal/grindcore infusion from Melbourne, Australia. A bit loud but they put on a great show too.
Krisiun has a brand new fan. Another band that I had only heard the name and just never had the interest to pursue Krisiun. Damn, I’ve been missing out. Read the rest of this entry »
Goatwhore Apocalyptic Havoc
If you still haven’t checked out the new Goatwhore album. Carving out The Eyes Of God, you’re doing yourself a great injustice. Seriously, it’s just that fuckin good. Here is a taste of the album with a video for the opening track, Apocalyptic Havoc.
The Conquer And Curse Tour Is Not To Be Missed

Daath's Emil Werstler
Last night I attended the Conquer And Curse tour as it rolled through Raleigh, NC. Check the tour dates at the bottom and if it comes near you, I would highly suggest you go. The show opened with Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky. I knew nothing about these guys except that they have a ridiculously long name. I never heard anything about them from anyone and I assumed that they were a deathcore or metalcore act with a name that long. They were really good though and sound like a death metal band and their [cute] female guitar player shreds. It started out as a small crowd but it wasn’t too bad or as bad as the last show we attended. Read the rest of this entry »
Review: Goatwhore – Carving Out The Eyes Of God
For a metal fan that has never heard Goatwhore, searching online to find out what genre they’re lumped in to can be misleading. Well, maybe misleading in regards to the anticipated sound of their new album, Carving Out The Eyes Of God. When I started to do a little research I found that they are considered to be “Blackened death metal” by most. Yes, I know, shame on me for never hearing Goatwhore before! Heard the name, just never heard the music. Anyway, I wouldn’t call them blackened death metal but if their older albums are anything like COTEOG, then I would have a difficult time defining their sound as blackened anything. With the exception of a few songs on the cd, you can’t really throw them in to that category.
Carving Out The Eyes Of God sees a lot of different elements of different sub-genres in metal. As I listen to the album I can make out the typical elemental sounds that are normally associated with death metal as well as some tremolo picking that’s often associated with black metal, but it doesn’t feel like it has much of a blackened aspect to it enough to throw the band in the mix with all the other BDM bands. The Scrap Metal Report 6/16/09
I’d like to first apologize for my lack of updates yesterday. It’s the end of the quarter at work and that means that they want to ship out as much as possible. In these trying economic times you neither turn dow or complain about overtime. Needless to say, I’ve been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. Luckily I have a great review to post in a bit from Alex Rochon on the new Children album Hard Times Hanging At The End Of The World. I also have another guest post from Will Spence, a fellow fan of the metal arts, as he introduces to you a German Thrash metal band. Until then here are a few news bits and contests running. Goatwhore Are Carving The Eyes Of God
Goatwhore have named their upcoming album “Carving The Eyes Of God”. Due out on June 23rd on Metal Blade records, this is Goatwhore’s follow up to 2006’s A Haunting Curse.
Vocalist Ben Falgoust comments on the direction of the new album; “I don’t really know how to explain this. I don’t want to come off with the typical speech about how this record is our best yet and all of that. I will say that I am quite pleased how it has turned out and all parts relating to it. I feel every member put a great deal of effort into their part of the project. I even feel Erik Rutan busted his ass even more this time to make us feel that we didn’t take any steps backwards in the recording and production of this release…I don’t even really care what the critics say. I think the end result is basically coming up with something you have put a lot of work into and the satisfaction achieved in completing it. I will say that the new material is ripping metal and we still have that ‘Goatwhore’ sound, whatever that may mean for each individual that enjoys or hates what we do. Just look at it as another step in the evolution of this band. Each person that hears it will have his or her own perception of it. Like it or not, we don’t have a say in it. The only thing we can do is just keep writing the way we do and accept the criticism. Doesn’t mean we are gonna listen to the criticism and change. Just give it an honest listen and if you dig it, awesome! If you don’t, then pass it on to a friend or use it as a new drink coaster.”
