Heavy Metal Happy Hour: The Ripper
Obviously it’s Saturday and I’m just feeling lazy enough to post a couple of bullshit videos. So, here is The Master Of Metal covering the classic Judas Priest tune, The Ripper from 1976’s Sad Wings Of Destiny.
Hellbent For Grammys: Judas Priest Win Grammy For A Song Written In 1977
I don’t really want to take anything away from Judas Priest, cause they perhaps deserve such an award after so many years, but for a song written 33 years ago? Yeah, the Grammys are retarded too. But we already knew that. I suppose in all technicality it was for “Best Metal Performance” and it came from a live album where the song was performed in 2008 and released in 2009, but still.
Oh well. Maybe Dave will one day get his due. Congrats to Rob and Judas Priest. Maybe a RRHOF nomination is coming next. Something else Megadeth along with a zillion other metal bands deserve.
The Scrap Metal Report 12/10/09
Holy shit, it’s been a long time since I have done a Scrap Metal Report. I’ve got a few points of interest in the metal world. Let’s get to it.
- If you watch That Metal Show with Eddie Trunk, the model that brings out the box of crap that Eddie gives away, died. Keri Lee was found dead in her apartment on December 7th. No word yet of C.O.D.
- Suicidal Tendencies will be releasing their first ever DVD. Welcome to the 21st century, gentlemen.
- Magnum Carnage. What? You’ve never heard of them? I received a “Press package” awhile back from the band and while I appreciate anyones effort to make metal music, I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to the entire album, no less review it. The album is called “More Unreal Than a Box of Precious Metal and Radioactive Ore”. Yes, that is the actual album title and if you are curious and want to read a review of this album, Check It out At Cerebral Metalhead. You can also hear a few tracks.
- Mastodon is making almost everyone’s Best Of..2009 lists with Crack The Skye, most recently by Time Magazine.
- Judas Priest will be releasing a live DVD box set of British Steel 25th anniversary shows from North America. More news on that as it comes.
Megadeth: Lyrically Speaking
After the buzz around the metal web about the new Megadeth song, I noticed a lot of people talking about lyrics and how they don’t think Dave Mustaine can write good lyrics anymore. I understand and I can agree to a certain extent. Thinking about it a little more, most of the veteran metal bands write shitty lyrics these days. In fact, Zakk Wylde even said that Ozzy has hired song writers. Let’s look at a few bands that have been around the mill a bit.
- Metallica: No this isn’t Metallica bashing time. They just fall in to this category. James Hetfield hasn’t really written any solid lyrics to a song in almost 20 years. Like it or not, the Black Album had some great lyrics. Everything after that kind of took a creative nose-dive.
- Judas Priest: Writing lyrics for a concept album isn’t nearly as difficult as writing lyrics for a random song. On Angel Of Retribution, Priest wrote a song about the Lochness monster. Enough said.
- AC/DC: These guys have been writing the same songs about the same things for over 40 years, but still manage to keep it semi-interesting.
- KISS: Hasn’t written a good song in over 40 years. Again, enough said.
- Anthrax: The last time these guys wrote a really solid tune was back when they had John Bush on vocals,
- Ozzy Osbourne: Have you heard Black Rain?
Do Tribute Bands Pay Royalties?
That was a question that has been on my mind for a few days. I’m going to catch a show this coming weekend where two tribute bands are playing. An Iron Maiden and Judas Priest tribute band. After thinking about the article about labels wanting more royalty money from radio stations, I kind of wondered about all the tribute bands out there that tour regularly.

A Sublime tribute band called “Badfish” has been doing Sublime songs for a few years and they raked in over a million dollars in ticket sales in 2006. That’s a pretty fat chunk of money for a tribute band. It takes talent to emulate a band and their sound, but in the end you’re using someone else’s creation and getting paid for it. Rob Halford Launches Metal God Record Label
Rob Halford is taking the “Metal God” patent one step further and starting his own record label.
“It’s been a long desire of mine to be a co-owner and participate in the operation of a label focused on supporting the rock and metal communities,” explains Rob Halford. “The infrastructure we have been assembling at Metal God Entertainment now allows myself and other artists to benefit from Metal God Records global physical and digital distribution networks, promotion and marketing services, apparel products and a broad range of Artist & Repertoire services.”
The label will partner with distributors to provide a global distribution service of physical and digital music. The website is up, but it’s not saying much at all, besides showing partnership with Conveyor of Canada, Alternative Distribution Alliance and Sony Music of Japan. http://MetalGodRecords.com
Judas Priest: A Touch Of Evil Live Album Details

Judas Priest A Touch Of Evil Live
Judas Priest are set to release a new live album sometime in July, with live songs that have never been released on other live albums during the Rob Halford years. That’s right, you may find a few of these songs on the live album, Live In London, during the Tim “Ripper” Owens years. Sadly those years were wasted with terrible songs. Owens was and still is a great screamer, but the song quality back then was just pure shit.
A Touch Of Evil contains 11 classic Priest songs for the collector, even with the Nostradamus songs. I can’t say that I’ll be running out and snatching this up though. I’m not big on live albums at all. If Slayer released another live album, I would probably be all over it. Here is the cover and track listing.
- Judas Rising
- Hellrider
- Between The Hammer & The Anvil
- Riding On The Wind
- Death
- Beyond The Realms Of Death
- Dissident Aggressor
- A Touch Of Evil
- Eat Me Alive
- Prophecy
- Painkiller
Shawn Drover: New Megadeth is "100% Metal"
I’m sure you all know that Megadeth is currently recording an album that, according to a message from Shawn Drover, the band’s current drummer, is going to be good.
“I will reveal nothing on the style of these new songs — just know that they are 100% HEAVY METAL.”
That’s some news I love hearing!
Shawn says that he’s heading home for the holidays, but before leaving they managed to get some demo quality tunes to take in over the break. Word has it that Mustaine will have a few finishing touches before post-production begins. Will it be done before ‘Deth hits the road with Judas Priest and Testament in February?
In any case, I personally hope this album turns out more like Killing is My Business…, So Far, So Good… So What? and Rust In Peace. With statements like this coming from the band, that’s not unachievable!
