Mastodon Videos NEVER Fail

Even though most of Mastodon‘s videos come off very cheese, they are always interesting and have some kind of message or concept. Sleeping Giant is no exception and it gives the basic concept of the evolution of the Earth from birth to destruction.

Best Of 2009 List Consistencies

I have not come across a “Best Of 2009″ list yet that Mastodon are not the number 1 pick or at least top three. It seems that Crack The Skye is an all around favorite of most bloggers and magazines. Compared to 2008, I think the magazines have finally got it right this year instead of putting a veteran band like Megadeth as number 1. While I love Endgame, I don’t think it is by any means better than Crack The Skye. Engame has been showing up in quite a few top 5′s though, including my own.

Another band that I am seeing quite a bit of on these best of lists is Anaal Nathrakh‘s In The Constellation Of The Black Widow, which has me extremely curious now. Also Goatwhore‘s Carving Out The Eyes Of God has made the cut on quite a few lists as well.

One album that is getting a lot of praise that I’m not really feeling is Revocation‘s Existence Is Futile. Perhaps I just haven’t heard enough, but the little bit that I have heard just hasn’t won me over. I’ll give it time and try again.

Slayer‘s World Painted Blood has popped up on a few and while I’m still a big Slayer fan, I just don;t feel that they have written an album worth any list in quite some time. World Painted Blood is better than most albums they have done in awhile but just not to my taste for a list. It’s just a matter of personal opinion I suppose.

All in all, it’s tough to make a list of top albums of 2009 because there were just so many great releases this year. That’s why I limited my own lists to 6 while pitting them in specific sub-genres. It was just much easier that way than arguing with myself if I made a top 20.

I do see a great inconsistency though, and that is that Skeletonwhich are being very under-rated with Breathing The Fire.  Amazing album that should be getting a lot more attention and praise, but again, it’s all about personal preference. I look forward to see what 2010 will bring us and I look forward even more to some more great shows to attend in the next year.

The Scrap Metal Report 12/10/09

new-scrap-metal

Holy shit, it’s been a long time since I have done a Scrap Metal Report. I’ve got a few points of interest in the metal world. Let’s get to it.

  • If you watch That Metal Show with Eddie Trunk, the model that brings out the box of crap that Eddie gives away, died. Keri Lee was found dead in her apartment on December 7th. No word yet of C.O.D.
  • Suicidal Tendencies will be releasing their first ever DVD. Welcome to the 21st century, gentlemen.
  • Magnum Carnage. What? You’ve never heard of them? I received a “Press package” awhile back from the band and while I appreciate anyones effort to make metal music, I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to the entire album, no less review it. The album is called “More Unreal Than a Box of Precious Metal and Radioactive Ore”. Yes, that is the actual album title and if you are curious and want to read a review of this album, Check It out At Cerebral Metalhead. You can also hear a few tracks.
  • Mastodon is making almost everyone’s Best Of..2009 lists with Crack The Skye, most recently by Time Magazine.
  • Judas Priest will be releasing a live DVD box set of  British Steel 25th anniversary shows from North America. More news on that as it comes.

Hook In Mouth Favorite Albums Of 2009 (So Far)

daath-the-concealersPutting this list together was not that difficult for me. Since the number of albums that I have actually heard or bought this year is fairly limited right now, it was a simple process of elimination. This is not a top 10 list of any sort. Some of these may not be out yet. This is simply MY favorites of 2009. If you’d like to share your favorite 2009 releases, put it in the comment section.

  1. ÐÅÅTH: The Concealers – This album probably gets the most play of any album I have listened to this year. There is just something about this album that keeps me coming back.
  2. Mastodon: Crack The Skye – Coming in at a very close second, Crack The Skye just blew me away the first time I heard it. I burned myself out on it for the first few weeks before it’s release and a little more after it’s release.
  3. Kreator: Hordes Of Chaos – Classic thrash metal icons show that they still have it with H.O.C. Their live show is amazing.
  4. Napalm Death: Time Waits For No Slave – Grindcore legends and pioneers show that they still have it going on and can teach a thing or two to all the ‘core bands out there, especially in the solos field.

Speaking Of Oblivion…

I give the guy credit for being ballsy enough to post this on Youtube. It’s not as if other people don;t post other terrible videos of themselves doing stupid shit.  The found it funny that he had to make it a point that he was singing while he was driving, like it was some big feat like juggling chainsaws while masturbating.  I sing in my car all the time and I would never post it on Youtube no matter how good I thought it was. Hey, if the guy was having fun who cares, right? Here is 6 minutes and 5 seconds of your life that you will NEVER get back.

Mastodon Oblivion Video

Oblivion. Perhaps my favorite song off of Mastodon’s Crack The Skye, though I have really been diggin The Czar lately. It’s almost impossible to skip around this album because every track is amazing. I still hope they consider making a movie of some sort for the album. Until then we’ll have to settle for great videos like this one.
