The Burning Question: Marty Friedman Vs. Chris Broderick
Marty Friedman was always my favorite Megadeth guitarist. He’s simply amazing and I love his solo work too. When word got out that Chris Broderick was part of the newest version of the Megadeth line up, shortly after Glen Drover left, I was excited. Glen Drover was (and still is) a great guitar player, but I thought if there was anyone that could help bring the classic Megadeth sound back to the band, it was Chris.
To me, Chris not only brings the shredding speed back in to the mix, but a lot of the ultra melodic solos that seemed to be absent after Marty left. Not only that, but he plays them with more accuracy than ANY post-Friemand Megadeth guitarist. It’s kind of toss up for me. On one hand I still love Marty Frieman’s work, but I’m more enthusiastic about what Chris Broderick is bringing to the Megadeth table these days. With that said, check out this video where Marty and Chris play the solo from Tornado Of Souls, and compare. Friemand…or Broderick?

Droogies!
Happy Valentine’s Day! I thought that Happy VD was a bit funny, but I really wanted to stop and take the time to thank you all for your support and especially thank all of the ticket holders for the RIP tour cities that have already sold-out.
Rehearsals are all done and we are ready for pre-production next week, and then we will be heading out to start the tour. Please send your prayers, best wishes, and positive thoughts our way, and if we are playing in your city or town I sure hope to see you. A big thank you goes out to all of the cities that are sold-out already!
Just so you know, we are playing 10 songs from over our 25+ year careers, as well as all 9 songs off of RIP. Read the rest of this entry »
Scrap Metal Report 2/9/10
Busy day today. Learnin’ the new job and then getting a tattoo finished. Let me tell you, if you have never got the inside fold of your elbow joint tattoo’d (the spot between your forearm and bicep), it hurts like a bitch. Anyway, after the eventful day, and me still very happy of the news about Dave Ellefson returning to Megadeth, I still felt like I needed to get a little bit of news up.
- Dave Ellefson spoke to Classic Rock exclusively and had quite a bit to say. Here is just a smidgen:
“So far, the reaction I’ve had from everyone has been overwhelmingly positive. I cannot wait to get back out there with Megadeth.”
- If you are a fortunate European, here is your chance to catch Bloodbath, live at Bloodstock 2010 on August 13-15, playing their set on the 13th in Derbyshire, UK. I think this is the first time they will be playing since the release of The Fathomless Mastery.
- The Red Chord and Black Label Society both lost their drummers. Oh and Trivium did too, but that’s old news.
- AC/DC are getting old as fuck and requested not 1 but 3 Oxygen tanks for their Melbourne Australia show. These guys have been touring their asses off since the release of Black Ice in October of 2008.
- Kreator have singed a deal with probably THE best metal label. Nuclear Blast has signed a long term deal with the German thrash metal veterans. I can’t wait for the follow up to Hordes Of Chaos.
- Lastly, DAATH have announced that they are working on a “Brand New Sound” for their next record coming this fall. I’m not quite sure yet what to think of this, but you can read more at Blabbermouth.
Collectively, these elements direct the left turns we have always chosen to take. This will not be ‘The Hinderers Part II’, ‘The Re-Concealers’, or ‘The Conhinderers’. This will be a brand new sound.
The Many Faces Of James Lomenzo
With the recent ousting of James Lomenzo, or whatever happened, I got to thinking about something I wrote about him awhile ago. In fact it was only a year and three days ago that I wrote it. It was originally posted at Metal Martyr and part of another post, but I picked apart the section about Lomenzo.
Now I’m not picking on or disrespecting James Lomenzo here. He’s a great Bass player, but I started to look at his history and images of the like and found it kind of funny. Lomenzo during his White Lion days took on the semi-glammish look of White Lion. No big deal, that was the look back then in bands like that. Then I kind of remembered him in Black Label Society, with David Lee Roth and now Megadeth. Check it out.

Alex Skolnick Has Way Too Much Going On.
Alex Skolnick is a busy man. Between playing in Testament, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and The Alex Skolnick Trio, he’s got a lot on his plate. His current project, touring in support of the release of The Alex Skolnick Trio’s Last Day In Paradise will leave him absent from touring with Testament on Megadeth’s Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary tour with Exodus during March. He’ll also start touring with the Trans Siberian Orchestra towards the end of March for their first ever Spring tour, performing Beethoven’s Last Night in its entirety and songs from Night Castle.
Here is the ironic part, but not like an uncomfortable irony. Glenn Drover, former guitarist of Megadeth will be filling in for Skolnick on the tour. No doubt that Glen can handle this as he has filled in before and is completely competent in his abilities.
Megadeth Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour With Testament And Exodus!
All I can say is that I just had to change my pants. Here is the announcement from Megadeth.com. Tour dates after the fold.
Megadeth will join forces with Testament and Exodus for a month-long jaunt that will find these thrash titans crisscrossing the nation on the Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour. These will be incredibly special shows that will delightMegadeth fans, as the band will be playing their landmark, genre-defining album, 1990’s “Rust in Peace”, in its entirety, in addition to other Megadeth set list favorites. The tour will kick off on March 1st in Spokane, WA and will run through the end of the month. MegaFanClub tickets presale will be held on Thursday, January 28th from 10AM to 10PM. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, January 29th
So, Who Wants To Know Why Suicide Silence Was Kicked Off Of The Endgame Tour
What I want to know is why it didn’t happen sooner so I wouldn’t have to hear them play back in November? If you recall, right at the end of the Endgame tour, Suicide Silence had their laminats taken away by Dave Mustaine and they didn’t play the last show. Well here is the frontman’s explanation to the question asked by an Affliction interviewer who is also Ozzy’s bass player (text from Blabbermouth):
“I think the whole situation was funny. It’s basic — [MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine] wanted our laminates back because we were getting people in, we were passing our laminates out. We were getting our friends in because we were only allowed, like, 10 people on the guest list. We were just doing that — getting people in — and he thought it was a risk to his dressing room, which it could have been; some superfan could have gone in there and done god knows what. And the situation went from that to him wanting our laminates back, and it was, like, the last day of tour. And we were just like, ‘You know what? I like this [grabbing his pass]. Sorry.’ And it turned out bad. But fuck it. It was still a fun tour.”
So, he was breaking the rules, hookin’ up his buddies, possibly creating potential problems and he thinks it was funny? Sounds to me like spoiled kids that don’t know how to follow simple rules when you are given the opportunity and privilege to tour with two amazing bands. We all know that Suicide Silence wasn’t chosen for the tour because of their talent. They were chosen because Dave is Business smart and he knows what sells tickets. I don’t think that was very fair to the rest of us, but oh well. You can watch the video of the interview below. Read the rest of this entry »
Megadeth Cryptic Writings: The Skull Beneath The Skin
Way back when Megadeth released Cryptic Writings, there was a concept of a string of comic books that were released and they were themed to some old school Megadeth songs. The very first one was drawn up around the storyline of Vic Rattlehead’s birth in the song “The Skull Beneath The Skin“. These comic books are hard to come by these days.
I created the video below using the comic book and the song from Killing Is My Business. I’m not the first one to do this but I thought it could use a little improvement and, well, I had nothing better to do at the moment. Enjoy.
Mouth To Mouth: Metal Underground Interviews Jeff Young Formerly Of Megadeth
This is starting to get stupid. Again, I can understand former Megadeth (So Far, So Good…So What) guitarist speaking up for himself but it’s just starting to look like asshole vs. asshole. Who do you believe? Better yet; who cares? At this point it is starting to look childish on Jeff’s part. In a recent interview with Daniel Becker at MetalUnderground.com, Jeff Young says all sorts of crazy things that you can believe or maybe not. He claims Dave was jealous of his skills and goes on to claim that he was not on drugs at all during any Megadeth performances and was never an addict. He even goes on to say that nobody can play his solos, not even Chris Broderick! It’s like a metal episode of Dr. Phil. Here are a few excerpt.
I never canceled a gig in my life and I never had a drug problem. I don’t even drink coffee. But, recently he was down in Australia and he decided to talk shit about me because he thought that he was far enough that word would never get back to me. He could have easily blamed Chuck since Chuck was the second biggest abuser in the band. But he was always jealous of me and it has been deep-seated and it has lasted forever, and everyone who has read the interviews over the years is angry at the crap he spewed.
Maybe you should try Dave’s Christmas blend, Jeff, it just might change your mind! Read the rest of this entry »
