The Difference Between A Great Guitar Player And A Guitar Great

DarrellAbbottA lot of the younger generation have it in their head that guitar players of yesterday are not as good as the technical guitar players of today and do not give the true guitar greats enough respect. In a sense, they are correct in the guitar players of today are perhaps more technically advanced players than those that pioneered rock and roll in to the metal foundries of today.

Let’s first look in that reasoning. The technical death metal guitar players of today play notes at a much higher rate of bpm than anything that was being played back in the late 60’s, right up in to the mid 90’s even. With maybe the exception of one Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption, that melted the faces of many people in 1978 before “melting faces” ever became a stupid, overused term in metal. From then on he was emulated and ended up inspiring many more guitar greats. Read the rest of this entry »

7 Review Shorts

Time to catch up on some reviews…the lazy way.

Children Of Bodom – Skeletons In The Closet

COB SkeletonsSome bands do great cover songs while others just completely shit all over the original but not in a good way. I’m sure you’ve heard most of Children Of Bodom’s cover songs at least one time or another. Skeletons’ does a mixture of both. There are a few that are really cool but the others just don’t sound right with COB covering them and they end up sounding terrible. Is it a buyer? Only if you’re a hardcore fan that wants all of their albums; otherwise I would pass on this one.

Shadows Fall – Retribution

Shadows Fall RetributionSolid effort from the Massholes. Retribution won’t blow you out of the water but I think it’s much better than Threads of Life but very far from The Art Of Balance. Is it a buyer? I would say so. Would I rush out to get is on a day that other great albums came out on? Probably not.

The Black Dahlia Murder – Deflorate

Black Dahlia Murder DeflorateWhile The Black Dahlia Murder doesn’t try to stray from what works for them, they infuse an amazing guitar player in Ryan Knight, formerly of Arsis. Ryan brings  the speed, technicality and melody that TBDM requires to be able to keep from being like so many other tech-death bands. Deflorate is full on, balls to the wall metal satisfaction at every turn. Is it a buyer? Hell yeah.

TBDM Deflorate

TBDM Deflorate

I’ve been meaning to work on a review of The Black Dahlia Murder’s Deflorate since I first heard it. Instead I’ve been a lazy bastard and also too wrapped up in Megadeth’s Endgame. Well if you want to dabble in an awesome new record before it comes out on Tuesday, head on over to Revolver Magazine Online and have a listen for yourself. If you’re already a fan I’m sure you’re going to dig it.

Black Dahlia Murder "Necropolis" Video

Today must just be one of those video premiere days. Black Dahlia Murder‘s Deflorate comes out in less than two weeks and I’m tellin’ ya…IT KILLS. Revolver magazine premiered their new video from the new album called Necropolis. Now you can check it out here and just tell me how much Ryan Knight kicks ass on lead guitar! Looks like they had a ball (no pun intended) making this video. Beer, metal and bowling. Just doesn;t get much better than that.

The Scrap Metal Report 7/29/09

new-scrap-metal

Only a few more days until I move out of farm country, thank goodness! This has been a hectic week packing and getting rid of shit that I wonder why the hell I was saving in the first place. Good news is that everything is set up for the move and if all goes well it should be fairly painless and I’ll be back up and running at normal speed by Monday evening. To wrap shit up until tomorrow and report on significant metal news, here is the latest scrap metal report.

  • Apparently Machine Head’s Phil Demmel really needs to take a break and take it easy. He collapsed once again this passed week at Sonisfeaer in Finland.
  • It’s also apparent that Roadrunner Records will sign just about anybody these days. Tommy Lee‘s Methods Of Mayhem are their newest addition. WTF?
  • Dave Mustaine needs to have a “quick” surgery done on his neck. He says it should be a brief procedure that shouldn’t side-line him very long. Dave is a trooper and I’m sure it’s not going to stop him from touring very long, especially with the upcoming release of Endgame.
  • BDM Deflorate

    BDM Deflorate

The Black Dahlia Murder have released the artwork to their upcoming album Deflorate. It’s not the best picture, but it gives you the basic feel. It’s a little different from past BDM album covers, but I don’t care as long as the album sounds good.

  • Love a band but hate most of the other fans of said band? I hear you and so does Metalsucks.net.

Headbangers Ball Top Videos Of 2008

This is one of few instances where I actually agree more with Headbangers Ball than I do with the viewer’s picks. Here is HBB’s #1 Pick

Top 10 Headbangers Ball 2008 Videos

  1. Black Dahlia Murder “Everything Went Black”
  2. Behemoth “At the Left Hand Ov God”
  3. Slipknot “Dead Memories”
  4. Machine Head “Halo”
  5. Meshuggah “Bleed”
  6. The Sword “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians”
  7. Slipknot “Psychosocial”
  8. In Flames “The Mirror’s Truth”
  9. Dir En Grey “Dozing Green”
  10. Bleeding Through “Death Anxiety”

Top 10 HBB Viewer’s Picks…kind of sad and I don’t get it.

  1. Dir En Grey “Dozing Green”
  2. All That Remains “Two Weeks”
  3. Avenged Sevenfold “Unholy Confessions”
  4. 3 Inches of Blood “Trial of Champions”
  5. Dream Theater “Forsaken”
  6. The Devil Wears Prada “HTML Rulez Dood”
  7. Underoath “Desperate Times, Desperate Measures”
  8. Slipknot “Psychosocial”
  9. Whitechapel “Possession”
  10. Brian “Head” Welch “Flush”

Seriously…Avenged Sevenfold? Devil Wears Prada? Some of the others weren’t bad but it just seems odd to me. I really don’t get the Dir En Grey band or video. I’m just not feeling it. Here is the Dir En Grey video again.

Black Dahlia One Man Short

The Black Dahlia Murder front-man, Trevor Strnad reports that just days before they kick off their next tour on December 1st, John Kempainen (guitars) has left the band.

“On the eve of our December tour with friends MISERY INDEX and SOILENT GREEN, we in THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER are faced with a heartbreaking dilemma: John K has abruptly left the fold and refuses to accompany us on the tour. We are left with no choice but to carry on with the dates as a four-piece. The remaining members of the band apologize for these unprofessional circumstances, but we feel that it is best to go through with the tour and not disappoint the other bands as well as the fans who are looking forward to these shows. Please come out and show some BLACK DAHLIA love in our hour of need.”

This is going to effect their live sound obviously, but it’s cool that they didn’t just say “Fuck it”, and decided to continue with the tour. They have a good break between December 19th and January 15th so maybe they can find someone to fill in. Below are the tour dates.
