Machine Head The Blackening (SE) Review
I’m a huge hater of special edition CDs coming out unless there is a good amount of bonus shit that comes along. That and unless it comes out at the same time as the original release. The Blackening is a great Machine Head cd and it spurred my interest in the band once again. Everyone knows of all the kick-ass songs that The Blackening has on it, but the material in question is the bonus material or “Special Edition” material if you may. There isn’t but an extra page or two in the liner notes and it comes in a cardboard slip case. Nothing super special really.
The two bonus track, a cover of Iron Maiden’s Hollowed Be Thy Name and Metallica’s Battery are good solid covers that still sound like Machine Head and the covered bands at the same time. I always like a good cover and these two serve you pretty well considering the bands that released them originally. Is it worth the price for these two cover songs? Nah…
The bonus DVD is cool with a lot of live footage as well as the 3 videos that were made from the album and the making of each of them. Overall the bonus DVD is great if you love , well… Machine Head videos and live footage. It all that worth the price? Maybe…
The bottom line is that if you already have this album and only want the cover tunes, check iTunes. If you already have this album and want to see the live fottage and videos, then see if a friend has it and borrow it. Honestly, how many times are you going to watch the DVD anyway? If you don’t own The Blackening at all then by all means, pick up the special edition and enjoy it for a few extra bucks.
